The Universe and its scale
Use the information here to illustrate objects in the universe and their relative sizes

•Large objects
•Produce light from nuclear fusion reactions
They seem small because they are so very far away

Nearest star is 4.3 light years away

So called because no light comes out of it
A star about 3 times the mass of the sun
Collapses until its volume is zero
It has a large gravitational pull near to it
Near to a black hole you would see a black sphere about 15km across

Small bodies of rock and ice
About 20 km across
Long elliptical orbits
When they are near the sun the ice melts.
The gases from the melting ice form the comet’s tail which can be 100 million km
They return at regular intervals about 100 years or so.

Rocks that fall from space
Usually small
As old as the solar system
Heat up as they fall through the atmosphere
Shooting stars

A star. Produces heat and light by nuclear fusion. Half way through its 10 000 million year life

Large groups of stars. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way
It looks something like this. Andromeda 2.2 million light years away The nearest galaxy!

1 light year is the 1 light year is 9460800000000 km

distance travelled by light in 1 year
